Russian GLONASS to be expanded

The Russian Space Agency has announced that it will increase the magnitude of the GLONASS constellation to 30 satellites by 2011. The original plans called for 24 satellites in the constellation.

According to Russian news and information agency Novosti, Russia will place six more satellites in orbit via two launches planned for 2008 and 2009.

At present, the GLONASS constellation includes 14 operative satellites.
